ENGLISH

The teachers have finished marking all the different components of the English papers. However, the results will only be out next week.

Some feedback on the EL examination...

Compo
The topic was on 'a time when you or your family member fell sick'.
Some of the boys still wrote in 3rd person instead of in 1st person although I have reminded them right before the exam. This caused them their marks. They will minus 2 marks for using 3rd person and minus 1 mark for not using either one of the 3 pictures. They were also penalised if they wrote about their friends instead.
Some of the boys really put in a lot of effort by writing more than 2 pages. Although some of them scored well for writing more than two pages, some of them simply repeated whatever they have written in other paragraphs just to make up for those extra pages. This really affected their content and language marks.

Main paper
For Booklet A, there was one question which caused most boys to lose one mark. The question was on 'Who's' and 'Whose'. Most boys got this question wrong. They were not able to differentiate between Who's = Who is and Whose.

For Booklet B, on grammar, some boys were tricked by the word sometimes: "jellyfish sometimes stings". Some of them chose sting as they were tricked by it.
For the open-ended question, some boys lost the marks on the answer that required them to spell it in plural form. The question required them to answer - a few posters/flyers/pamphlets/notices. However, some of them did not add in the letter 's' and they got zero for that question.
For the basic comprehension, most boys lost half mark for wrong spelling of the word 'Antarctica' which can be found in the passage itself. For the open-ended comprehension, some boys wasted their the 4-word phrase question marks by copying the phrase wrongly. Most spelt the word 'searched' wrongly and they got zero as there is no partial mark for this question. However, if they wrote in one whole sentence, we will deduct marks for wrong punctuation. The last question was slightly tricky and most boys could not get the answer.

These are some of my comments for the papers. I will be going through the papers with them either tomorrow or next week after the level teachers are given the clearance to do so.

Thank you parents for your support and guidance throughout this exam. Hopefully our boys will continue to work hard for their future. :)

Thank you! :D
